In partnership with SHRM, Wright State University offers this certification preparation course to ensure participants receive the most updated information for the certification examination utilizing the SHRM Learning System® for PHR®/SPHR® Certification Preparation program.  An essential tool for maintaining high professional standards, certification shows that you have demonstrated mastery of the HR body of knowledge and have accepted the personal challenge to stay abreast of new developments in the human resource field.  HR professionals have to know how to deal effectively with human resource strategic planning, international competition, management staffing, family and social issues impacting the work place, employee rights and emerging HR issues of the last decade of the 20th century.  Certification is important to you because it provides:

  • National recognition of your professional achievement.
  • An aid for your career advancement.
  • A visual reminder of your professional status - through use of your earned designation on business correspondence and display of your certificate of certification.
  • Hiring: 96% of employers state that a certified job applicant has a greater hiring advantage than a non-certified job applicant.
  • Promotion: 91% of employers state that a certified HR professional is more likely to be considered for promotion than a non-certified HR professional.
  • Job Security: 81% of employers believe that a certified HR professional has greater job security than a non-certified HR professional.

Certification is granted ONLY when a human resource professional has demonstrated achievement of national standards ranging from technical operational knowledge to comprehension of contemporary management concepts and practices.

Level of Certification

Candidates may select the level of certification they feel best represents their mastery of the HR body of knowledge. Candidate performance has shown that appropriate HR experience and educational background contribute significantly to success of the examinations. It is strongly recommended that candidates attempting the PHR exam have two to four years of HR exempt-level experience.  Likewise, it is strongly recommended that candidates attempting the SPHR examination have six to eight years of HR exempt-level experience. Success depends on mastery of the entire body of HR knowledge.

As a professional development tool, the SHRM Learning System for PHR/SPHR can increase a participant's knowledge of the field of human resources and provide a current reference of HR practices.  As a certification preparation tool, the SHRM Learning System for PHR/SPHR has a measurable track record of success for those qualified to sit for the exam.

Documentation has shown that participants who attend a SHRM Learning System for PHR/SPHR course through an approved educational institution have consistently higher pass rates on the certification exam than those who do not attend a SHRM Learning System for PHR/SPHR course.

The SHRM Learning System for PHR/SPHR is the official SHRM study material to use in preparing for the PHR or SPHR examinations.  Questions used in class are in the same format and cover the same body of human resource knowledge as the PHR and SPHR exams.  These materials are updated at least once a year to reflect changes in the body of knowledge.

Participants will receive assistance in preparing for the PHR or SPHR exams and an excellent overview of the human resource field.  You will be able to network with other human resource professionals, earn continuing professional education credits, and receive a certification of completion.  This cost-effective program offers formal human resource training that many human resource professionals have not received through their employment or education.

Use of Certification

The Human Resource Certification Institute program is voluntary in nature, and such certification is conferred by HRCI solely for those purposes stated in the certification handbook.  Those persons or organizations who choose to incorporate the HRCI Certification as a condition of employment or advancement do so for their own volition.  Such persons must determine for themselves whether the use of such a certification process, including its eligibility and recertification requirements, when coupled with any other requirements imposed by such persons, meets their respective needs and complies with any laws applicable to them.

Cost:

The cost of the course is $825 for students, $955 for SHRM members, and $1025 for non-SHRM members which includes the registration fee, course material, SHRM Learning System for PHR/SPHR, the HRCI test preparation manual, tips for test taking, practice tests, pre- and post- practice tests, and refreshments.

Upon completion of registration and payment for this course, NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN

Classes will be held at Wright State University in Rike Hall.  Wright State University will allow you to retake the PHR/SPHR Certification course again at no cost at the very next offering of the course should you not pass the PHR/SPHR exam. You will be required to use your old materials or purchase new books if you choose to re-take the course. Verification will be required.

The fee for the PHR/SPHR Certification Examination is not included in the course fee. To register for the exam you will need to register through HRCI (Human Resource Certification Institute). The home page of this web site has a link to HRCI which allows you to apply for the PHR/SPHR exam online.

How do the PHR and SPHR exams differ?

The PHR examination differs from the SPHR examination in terms of the focus and cognitive level of questions.  The PHR examination questions tend to be at the operational or technical level, while the SPHR examination questions tend to be at the strategic or policy level. The following table indicates the functional areas covered on the examination as well as the percentage designated to each area.

Computer-Based Testing (CBT) delivers all PHR and SPHR exams by computer.CBT allows greater flexibility for candidates in test scheduling with two annual eight-week testing windows.
