You will engage in a four-course sequence to become better equipped with the skills necessary to integrate, create and analyze economic data. You will also have an opportunity to learn from a faculty of accomplished, research-active academics whose expertise focuses on data analysis. Courses are drawn from the Wright State economics department and other departments across campus that study  different domains of data analysis.

Complete the certificate, and you will be able to:

  • Analyze economic data using cutting-edge tools in statistics, regression analysis and forecasting.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with current software used throughout the chain of data collection, formating, and presenting. 
  • Present and communicate the contents of analysis, including their visualization. 
  • Understand the methodologies, limitations, and assumptions employed to perform data analysis in economics and other disciplines.

Academics and Curriculum

All courses are offered either online or in evening face-to-face settings and the program can be completed in as few as 8 months. No prior experience with data analysis is required. The courses are for-credit, and credits can be transferred (subject to program admission) to different Wight State master’s degree programs, including the Master of Social and Applied Economics, Master of Information Systems, or the Master of Science in Marketing Analytics and Insights. To complete the program, you need at least 12 hours of coursework from the following courses:

Required courses in the certificate program are (3 credits each):

  • EC 7090: Econometrics and its Applications
  • EC 7120: Time Series Analysis and Economic Forecasting

You must also complete (2) of the following elective courses/course sequences:

  • EC 7400: Cost-Benefit Analysis
  • EC 7770: Economic Studies (when covering quantitative topics). 
  • MIS 7100: Data-Driven Businesses and Organizations
  • MIS 7600: Business Data Visualization
  • MBA 7600: Marketing Strategy, and one of the following
  • MKT 7800: Marketing Analytics or 
  • MKT 7820: Marketing Analytics: Tools and Insights
  • GEO 6430: Geographic Information Science Principles and
  • GEO 6440: Advanced Geographic Information Applications

Admission

  • Proof of bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Prerequisite courses: College-level statistics (MBA 5800 or equivalent) and calculus (EC1050 or equivalent) with a grade of C or higher.
