An accountancy degree will prepare you with a solid foundation of financial knowledge and regulations to pursue a variety of career paths. This program can prepare you for careers in finance, corporate management, government, or even entrepreneurship.

Our accounting program has high rates of job and internship placement for our students. We are the nation’s only five-time winner of the Institute for Management Accountants Student Case Competition and the only university to have two teams place nationally in the same year. We also provide opportunities just for our accounting majors, such as the John Talbott Accounting Leadership Program, job fairs with local employers, the Beta Alpha Psi Honor Society, the accounting club, and much more.

Admission

Review the admission requirements and complete the admission application. Identify whether you will be majoring in accountancy.

If you are a current student and wish to change majors, submit a Major/Minor Change Request by logging in to WINGS, then select Student Academics under Your Launchpad. If you are an undecided/exploratory student, talk to your advisor about majoring in accountancy.
 

Program Outcomes

If you complete the program, you will graduate with a Bachelor's in Business with a major in accounting. You will have a broad educational experience in completing professional accounting exams such as the Certified Internal Auditor or Certified Management Accountant exams. This program also provides an excellent background for students interested in pursuing a law degree in the future.

    The program includes core accounting courses such as Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, and Accounting Information Systems. More information about all Accountancy courses can be found in the Wright State catalog.

  • How can I access the accounting course curriculum?

    You can find the course curriculum on the university's official website under the accounting department's section or request it from an academic advisor.

  • Are there any research opportunities in the accounting department and can I participate in faculty-led research projects?

    Research activities occur at the faculty level. Most students would not have the necessary Accounting background needed to assist on research projects until their senior year of coursework. Note that most of the faculty-led research projects are non-funded, hence they are not typically a conduit for student assistantships. After you join the program, you may reach out to individual faculty in the program to explore networking and mentorship opportunities.

  • What student organizations are available for accounting students?

    Organizations include the Beta Alpha Psi. This organization provides networking and professional development opportunities.

  • How can I connect with professors for mentorship or guidance?

    You can attend office hours, email faculty members, or participate in department-sponsored events to establish connections.

  • What internship opportunities are available for accounting students?

    The Accountancy program partners with public accounting firms, private businesses and government agencies to offer internship opportunities for students. The connections and relationships the Accountancy faculty have with business professionals and Accountancy alumni provide a wide variety of opportunities to Accounting majors.  Emails to Accounting majors about internship opportunities are regularly sent to students from Accountancy faculty. In addition, the university promotes opportunities through the Career Center.

  • What resources are available to help international students transition into the accounting program?

    Wright State offers orientation programs, academic advising, and mentorship opportunities for all students. Check with the University Center of International Education (UCIE) or the Graduate School for more information on orientations and transition to Wright State. You can also join student cultural and academic organizations for additional support.
