Finance, marketing, and management information students can advance their career and skills by taking a concentration in business analytics. Business analytics is the practice of finding business insights through analyzing business information and data; it is critical to help businesses make decisions and navigate a constantly changing global climate. Students in other majors can complete the certificate in business analytics to complement their current program.
“You can’t just throw information at people; it has to make sense,” said Shu Schiller, associate professor and chair of information systems and supply chain management. “The data doesn’t tell you much by itself. You have to analyze and extract meaningful information. Then you must take the audience step by step through the data and draw a conclusion.”
In a recent business analytics class featuring students of all majors, students analyzed and visualized how people spend their time, the history of destructive hurricanes in the North Atlantics, how much Americans drink, and where and how you are mostly likely to die. Many of these classes happen in the Data Analytics and Visualization Environment (DAVE) lab.
The business world is changing and the need for data analytics is growing. Choosing to concentrate in business analytics within your finance, marketing, or management information systems degree will help equip you with the skills needed for a modern career. Not majoring in one of those? You can still complete a minor in business analytics and gain valuable skills to supplement your current major.
